Unemployment in the state rose to a two-year high of 5.2 percent in August, according to state figures; the state has shed 14,000 jobs since June...The state Senate adjourned without voting on a piece of legislation designed to bail out Southern California Edison amid accusations from consumer groups that the measure would prove to be costly for consumers; the bill, which has support from the governor, may be up for discussion in a special session next month.
