L.A. Law Firm Explains Labor Changes

Lawyers at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP explained recent changes in employment law at a breakfast seminar held Jan. 26 in the firm’s Los Angeles office.

In front of about two dozen corporate representatives working in technology, eyewear, events planning and other sectors, Manatt’s staff clarified requirements for meal and rest periods and Proposition 64, the ballot initiative passed on Nov. 2 that limits a person’s right to sue on the basis of unfair competition. The four lawyers also discussed the California Domestic Partnership Act, sexual harassment laws and the USA Patriot Act, among other topics.

Sandi King, a partner at Manatt, said that following Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s withdrawal on Dec. 20 of emergency mealand rest-period regulations proposed by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, public hearings will be held on Feb. 4 in Los Angeles to discuss the proposed regulations. More hearings will be held in San Francisco and Fresno, Calif., during the next two months. The public also can submit comments in writing to the DLSE office in San Francisco through March 2.
