Where Innovation Meets Denim

Andrew and Jegrave;nelle Meyer vowed to shake up Orange County’s fashion scene more than 11 years ago. They opened a boutique called Habit, where they gambled that the surf-crazy consumers of the region would set aside their closet space for unknown fashion designers.

Their bet paid off. Habit is located at The Lab specialty shopping center, down the street from the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif. The boutique more than doubled in size to 2,500 square feet after acquiring an adjacent space last year.

Jegrave;nelle Meyer said the new space—decorated with French chateau, American Western and bohemian accents—will give her clients more room to discover labels such as English Laundry and Fresh. Shoppers will also be able to browse more easily through the offerings of the store’s biggest seller: True Religion jeans.

The fit of True Religion’s pants specifically made the brand a top seller with Habit’s fashion-forward clientele, Jegrave;nelle Meyer said.

“It is flattering on most body types,” she noted. “It’s great denim, good stitching, and it looked different from everything in the market when it came out.”

Price points are $168 to $400. The most popular True Religion style is the “Joey,” which features pointed flap pockets on the rear. At the higher end is the “Patchwork Joey,” which displays intricate patchwork meant to evoke the style of the Woodstock generation. “We got them in a couple of weeks ago, and we have one pair left,” Jegrave;nelle Meyer said. The Meyers also run another store called Habit in San Clemente, Calif. —Andrew Asch
