Representatives of five of the nation’s largest unions announced plans to join forces to “rebuild the American labor movement in the face of globalization.” Leaders from the Teamsters, United Food and Commercial Workers, UNITE-HERE, the Laborers’ International Union of North America and the Service Employees International Union held a press conference on June 15 at LIUNA’s New York headquarters to unveil the new multi-union organization and discuss its plan of action. The unions, which together represent 5 million workers, plan to organize nonunion workers and restructure their activities to reflect the effect of globalization on the U.S. economy.
