L.A. Fashion Week Fall '05: A Friend of Mine

Designer Kelly Marshall returned to the P. Ka Bu runway series on March 14 to show her second collection of retro-inspired, girly separates at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

Marshall took an unusual approach to creating the line. She first chose ’40s-style hair and makeup; then selected the music, a remixed version of the standard “(You Give Me) Fever”; and then created flirty full skirts in whimsical mid-century prints, curve-hugging pants, and blouses trimmed in ribbon and velvet.

Gaucho-style pants with low-placed pockets and side buttons were among her best pieces. Some featured contrast trim, sequined tuxedo piping and rows of pleats. She topped them with blouson tank tops; lace boy beaters; and peasant tops in sheer fabrications, including a retro Swiss-dot fabric. —Alison A. Nieder
