L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Sewdown

The 10 independent clothing designers who showed at the seventh biannual Sewdown on Oct. 21 at The Vanguard in Hollywood varied in style, but their clothing all showed a sexy edge.

Models ripe with attitude strutted down the runway in high-cut skirts, boyshorts and midriff tops to the hollers of a party crowd that roared until 4 a.m.

Sewdown featured Ta-tas, Pink Cookies, Rubbish Garb, JC-US, D.V.U.S. Denim, Duff Stuff, Ramona, Gloria Edwards, DeFile, Ella Ruth and Atousa G. on the runway with accessories by Wahine Jewelry, Cuffz by Linz, Uccleacute; Design, Lani Bleu Designs, Konplott and Brown & Co.

The event is also a marketplace for designers to set up booths and sell their wares. “As a designer, it’s important to meet your customers,” said designer Atousa G., who produced Sewdown to be an “urban and edgy” alternative show during Los Angeles Fashion Week.

Printed tees and boyshorts were crowd pleasers, including Ta-tas’ quirky messages that read “you couldn’t afford my ta-tas” emblazoned across the chest and Duff Stuff’s tank with tattered edges and a patch that read “shirt.”

Recycled vintage fabrics were a hit as seen in DeFile’s thermal dress and Rubbish Garb’s skirt made from a Judas Priest T-shirt. Ramona’s hooded hats with waist-length flaps had a fairy and elfin slant. Atousa G. closed the show with her varied collection of country-print button-down shirts, cargo bottoms and cute jersey items. —Rhea Cortado
