L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Eduardo Lucero

One thing that designers should avoid, according to Eduardo Lucero, is being pigeonholed. The Los Angeles–based designer took that notion to heart when designing his Spring 2006 collection, which bowed on Oct. 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif. This season, the emphasis was less on the sexy gowns that made him a celebrity favorite. Instead, he focused on more loose-fitting clothes, sometimes with a bohemian edge. The collection even included swimwear, which he hadn’t tried in six seasons. Yet no matter where his experiments led him, one thing remained the same: The collection looked glamorous.

The crowd enthusiastically applauded a turquoise matte jersey dress with turquoise pleated wide-legged pants. His swimwear included a chartreuse two-piece bathing suit and a white, fringed off-the-shoulder swimsuit.

He also experimented with bursts of color in pieces such as the teal and brown paisley chiffon blouse that was reminiscent of gypsy styles and the American Southwest.

The show ended by going back to such basics as the little black dress. —Andrew Asch
