L.A. Fashion Week Spring '06: Yana K

Russian-born Yana Khromova could be considered a precocious designer and entrepreneur.

At 22, she has a store on Melrose Avenue. And for her Spring/Summer ’06 line, seen Oct. 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, she showed 61 looks that were heavy on dresses.

Khromova, who incorporated styles from the 1950s and 1960s into her Yana K creations, had something for everyone. Maybe that’s because her design icons vary from Coco Chanel to Stella McCartney.

Dresses dominated the lineup. There were long dresses, short dresses, handknit dresses, plaid dresses and little black dresses. Then there were high-waisted pants, low-waisted pants, linen shorts, brocade tops and swimsuits.

The designer dedicated a lot of her line to hand-knit items. Hand-knit dresses included a yellow minidress with a ruffled edge trimmed in red and a bright spaghetti-strap halter dress with an orange top, yellow midriff and green skirt decorated with orange patches. There were also a number of hand-knit swimsuits, such as a light peach and brown one-piece with cutout sides and a gold one-piece with a plunging neckline.

Khromova was fond of using extra-wide belts and accentuated waistlines to make a statement. —Deborah Belgum
