L.A. Fashion Week Spring '08: Sue Wong

Sue Wong looked to Modern Art masters such as Miro, Matisse and Calder to create part of her Spring 2008 collection, which bowed on the runway on Oct. 14 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, Calif.

Original hand-painted prints in bold colors gave bubblehemmed silk dresses an ’80s air. The designer played with fun silhouettes including bat-wing and blouson styles for a black-and-white group, then carried the shapes forward into geometric prints.

Classic African colors and prints were the foundation for a group that paid homage to the roots of Cubism. Blown-out animal prints fused with florals for painterly prints in nature-inspired colors.

Rich brights were the order of the day for a group of Grecianinspired evening gowns in turquoise, lime and fuchsia, while all shades of green from emerald to mint were used in a group dubbed “Green Goddess.” Wong said her personal collection of modern art inspired the daytime dress collection she showed on the runway. “I wanted to show the modern aspect of Sue Wong,” she said. —Alison A.
