S.F. Design Schools Partner for Charity Fashion Show

Sustainably chic fashion and philanthropy will merge at the upcoming Discarded to Divine charity event in San Francisco.

The third annual gala event, set for April 26, will feature a “green” cocktail reception, recycled-couture fashion show, and silent and live auctions to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Francisco’s programs for the poor and homeless. This year, Discarded to Divine has partnered with the Academy of Art University, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), City College of San Francisco, the de Young Museum and the presenting sponsor, Macy’s West. Luxury clothing retailer Wilkes Bashford is the honorary chair of the event. “Not only is our community leading the green movement, but it is incredibly rich in design talent and creative thinking,” Bashford said in a prepared statement.

“This exciting event sheds light on some serious topics in a very fun way.”Participating Bay Area fashion designers—including Colleen Quen, Cari Borja, Verrieres & Sako, Nice Collective and Jessica McClintock and students from the three schools—have designed one-of-a-kind fashions from recycled materials inspired by the de Young Museum’s permanent collection. Elegant evening gowns and cocktail dresses were made from materials donated to St. Vincent de Paul and will be auctioned off at the April 26 gala event hosted by the Academy of Art University.
