Intellectual Property for Sale on Web

A Troy, Mich., company has developed a Web site (www.techtransferonline.com) that serves as a clearinghouse and research center for intellectual property, allowing companies to research and purchase IP, patents, trademarks and other properties.

E-IP LLC has gathered intellectual property from universities, corporations and other research institutions, assembling thousands of IP sources available for sales and research.

The site is free to search. There’s a commission charge of $5,000 for each license granted. There’s also a subscription-based option of $99 per year for companies wanting to list an IP for sale.

“It’s similar to entering keywords on eBay to find a car instead of going to each dealership,” said a company spokesperson, Maria MoraBowan. “As companies are increasingly looking outside their own walls for innovation, a central place was needed to display available technologies.”

The site covers a variety of industries. It currently features a number of textile applications such as nanotechnology-based textiles, ring-spinning systems, garment finishes, coloring techniques and others.

The properties listed come from large corporations that want to get value from their intangible assets to intellectual properties that have yet to be published from other companies. The site is secure and features e-mail alerts for new listings as well as lists of leads from parties that have viewed a listing.
