Antik Denim Veteran Goes Solo

Alex Caugant, half of the design team behind the Antik Denim label, launched AC Collection, his own premium denim line, for Fall 2008.

Catering to men and women, AC takes cues from traditional tailoring techniques used for highend pants, according to Caugant. That means fewer seams and inside yokes. “They look like tailored pants, not boring five-pocket jeans,” Caugant said.

Still, denim is the focus of the collection, which also includes contemporary knit and woven pieces. The workhorse fabric is whipped into sexy pencil skirts, jackets and high-waist pants and is coated with oily wax for a unique finish. Other fabrications, including wool and pigment-dyed satin, are used to create five-pocket jean-inspired looks with an upscale twist. Silhouettes for the AC denim, made mostly of Italian and Japanese fabrics, include a flare fitted through the knee; skinny and boot cuts for women; and classic skinny, straight, boot and relaxed fits for men.

Wholesale prices for the line range from $79 to $125. Retailers got their first look at the line during the Project Global Trade Show in Las Vegas earlier this year. AC Collection will be sold at specialty retailers, including Fred Segal Santa Monica, Kin, Ron Robinson and 80’sPurple.com. —E.B.
