Chain Reaction: California's Newest Boutiques

Times are tough, but retailers are still opening stores at some of California’s most exclusive addresses. Here is a list of a few recent openings.

Active: On Nov. 28, the Mira Loma, Calif.-based skateboard shop will officially dive into the Rodeo Drive of surf and skate. Active will open a flagship store at the recently debuted The Strand retail center. It is located across the beach from popular surf spot Huntington Beach Pier and neighboring high-profile surf emporiums HSS and Jack’s Surfboards.

Alberta Ferretti: Italian fashion luminary Alberta Ferretti opened a 4,000-square-foot emporium Sept. 20 at 8626 Melrose Ave., located in Los Angeles’ up-and-coming designer neighborhood of Melrose Village.

American Apparel: In October, American Apparel closed its 1,200-square-foot store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and opened a 4,200-square-foot store across the street at 7726 Melrose Ave. The basics retailer is planning to open more than seven stores in California in the near future.

Arcade Boutique by Rochelle Gores: High fashion and casual mix it up at this boutique, which opened Sept. 5 at 8473 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles.

Burberry: In October, British fashion house Burberry tripled the size of its South Coast Plaza location. The 5,500-square-foot Burberry, located in Costa Mesa, Calif., offers lines Burberry Prorsum and Burshy;berry London Collection.

Catherine Malandrino Maison: On Oct. 20, French fashion star Catherine Malandrino opened her new concept store, featuring her couture and more-casual styles at 651–653 La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles.

Ever: On Oct. 23, casual brand Ever opened a boutique at 8251 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles.

Filippa K: On Nov. 21, Swedish fashion label Filippa K will open its first American store, located at 66 Kearney St. in San Francisco.

Hermegrave;s: French luxury label Hermegrave;s will open a 2,500-square-foot boutique Thanksgiving week in San Diego’s Fashion Valley retail center.

IP: Retailer and fashion manufacturer Jacques Kevorkian opened this contemporary and casual store for men and women Oct. 10 at 7473 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles. It offers labels such as Artine and True Religion. Kevorkian eventually hopes to build IP into a chain of stores.

Macy’s: On Nov. 21, the remodel of the historic Pasadena, Calif., Macy’s will debut. First constructed in 1947, the remodeled Macy’s will offer brands such as bebe sport, Inc, Taryn Rose and Anne Klein Collection.

Merrell: On Sept. 13, outdoor-apparel brand Merrell debuted its San Francisco flagship store at 285 Geary St. The 2,400-square-foot store, located in Union Square, sells Merrell shoes, apparel and accessories for men, women and kids.

Prana: On Nov. 15, the yoga and sports fashion label opened its third concept shop. It is located at The Edge retail center in El Segundo, Calif.

Premier: Gila Leibovitch and Johnny Alper, co-owners of Premier, opened designer children’s store Premier Kids at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. On Black Friday, they plan to open mother-and-daughter store The Vault Women and Girls at 361 Forest Ave. in Laguna Beach, Calif.

Stella Page Design: On Oct. 22, Monterrey, Calif.–based handbag and accessories designer Stella Page debuted her first store, Stella Page Design, a 500-square-foot boutique, at 8576 Melrose Ave. in the Melrose Village neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Trina Turk: Trina Turk opened her fourth self-named boutique at Newport Beach’s Fashion Island retail center on Nov. 15. The new 2,555-square-foot Trina Turk boutique was designed by Kelly Wearstler, who helped shape the look of Turk’s Los Angeles and Palm Springs boutiques.
