MAGIC MAN in Vegas

The MAGIC Marketplace showcased menswear on the runway during the Aug. 25–27 run of the mega trade show in Las Vegas. For Spring 2009, the trend show included a range of themes, from “High Sierra” casual to “Pebble Beach” preppy and “Havana Kings” cool. Women’s and children’s looks complemented the various men’s trend groups on the runway.

Casual styles fit for the mountains in “High Sierra” opened the show. A mix of plaid shirts, cargo shorts and hiking boots characterized the look. Women’s styles were feminized with floral-print camisoles, short shorts and striped blouses tied at the midriff.

Preppy was hip for a group titled “Silver Lake.” Styles ranged from V-neck sweaters and argyle vests topped with fedoras to casual hoodies and tees paired with jeans. For women, a Golden State ecru top with lace sleeves paired with shorts was sweet, and a Celebrity Pink striped vest, tee and washed-gray jeans were ultra-hip.

It seems it’s definitely hip to be square for Spring. The preppy trend continued with a plethora of golf-inspired looks in soft pastels, madras plaids and seersucker in “Pebble Beach.” For the true golf pro, a Greg Norman argyle vest, navy polo and orange short were ultra-stylish.

Despite all the plaid on the runway, the show wasn’t short on edge. There were plenty of rock ’n’ roll frayed-denim looks in the “Hollywood Nights” group. It featured foil-printed tees, bejeweling, fleurs de lis, crosses and frayed edges for those who are still into the look.

“Dogtown” took the show to the beach with casual gear in plaid graphic prints and an infusion of bright colors.

For those wanting casual sophistication, linen suits, colorful shirts and fedoras epitomized a “Havana Kings” look. Colorful printed dresses for the ladies completed the Cuban-inspired theme. —N. Jayne Seward
