India Calling

India Tourism celebrated the incredible culture of its homeland by bringing a taste of India to Los Angeles. On Sept. 17, the California Plaza was transformed into a version of India with everything from fashion to photography, crafts and cuisine. The event was created to offer a unique experience of India’s rich culture.

The California Plaza located in downtown Los Angeles featured a special National Geographic photo exhibition with 10x 10 and 3x5 foot tall images of India. In addition, a diverse group of artisans showcased their products in a mini craft-village. Guests enjoyed a cocktail party and entertainment which included traditional Indian music and dance in the outdoor location.

An elaborate dinner was prepared by top chefs of Indian’s leading hotels organized by the Experience India Society which includes The Taj Group, The Oberoi Group, ITC Welcomgroup, Hyatt and Leela Hotels. Chef Hemant Oberoi of Taj Mahal Palace and Towers, one of the most celebrated chefs of India, was flown in especially for the dinner.

Ashma–Leena, one of the top fashion brands in India, presented her colorful designs that paired the traditional with the modern. The stunning fashion show was held on a runway over the elegant infinity pool. The collection featured traditional hand embroidery, appliques and well as hand-crafted bridal-wear.

The India Festival also included a full day of events at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 20 with tradition handicrafts, classical Indian music and bhangra dance lesson.

An artisan from the Hodka Village from the state of Gujarat where artists are known for their leather craft and traditional motifs.
