Carl Lawrence and his wife, Dede, were in the apparel business for more than 30 years until they retired a few years ago.

But retirement was not for them. They are back with a new label and a new showroom launched just in time for the Holiday/Resort season at Los Angeles Fashion Week.

Their line of updated knit tops is called Think Knit, a division of U.S. Tops Importers Inc. It is geared for women who want to be trendy but not over-the-top trendy.

“The customer now is going for the updated, casual look,” said Lawrence, whose previous sportswear labels were called Hollywood Freeway and Maygene. “They are more trend-oriented than they have ever been.”

The tops are in subdued but sophisticated colors such as black, gray, taupe, olive green and mauve. They are made primarily of rayon with 5 percent spandex and manufactured all over the world.

All sorts of embellishments grace the tops, such as a cropped cardigan with a tank top and a chain necklace or a v-neck top with sequins bordering the neckline. There are 30 to 40 styles in the collection with wholesale price points falling between $19.75 and $34.75.

Carl and Dede, who designs and merchandises the line, aim to sell their tops to specialty stores and boutiques that cater to the fashion-forward woman.—Deborah Belgum
