Material World

A California clothing company has sued entertainer Madonna over the rights to use the “Material Girl” label in her new line of clothing being sold at Macy’s. L.A. Triumph of Cerritos, Calif., said it and its predecessor have been selling a line of women’s clothing under the trade name “Material Girl.” The predecessor company—OC Mercantile Corp.—registered a state trademark for the term in 1997 in California, according to a complaint filed recently in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Madonna said she has been known as the “Material Girl” ever since her song of the same name came out in the mid-1980s. Macy’s declined to comment about the case.
