Sunset Plaza Plans New Retail Building

Sunset Plaza, one the Los Angeles area’s oldest retail districts, broke ground on a new building on Oct. 26.

The new retail building is scheduled to be completed on July 1, 2011. The 15,400-square-foot, two-story building will have space for 10 stores. The new building will increase Sunset Plaza’s total square footage to 110,000 square feet.

The site for the new building is a former parking lot located on the southeast corner of the 8600 block of West Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, Calif. It is located adjacent to the popular restaurant Ketchup.

A spokesperson for Sunset Plaza owners Montgomery Management said the retail district will not lose any of its parking spaces because of the new building. Rather, it will continue to offer 600 free parking spaces around the popular retail area.

Los Angeles–based Killefer Flammang Architects designed the new building. Artist Brad Howe also has been given the job to create a sculpture in front of the building.

No leases have been signed yet. For much of Sunset Plaza’s more than 80-year history, the retail district has been the address for high-end multi-line fashion boutiques such as H.Lorenzo, as well as designer boutiques such as Just Cavalli.—Andrew Asch
