Otis Toasts Bob Mackie and Santa Monica Place

Otis College of Art and Design fêted legendary costume designer Bob Mackie and Santa Monica Place with a cocktail reception at The Peninsula Beverly Hills. The event kicked off the annual scholarship fundraising efforts for the college which will culminate on May 7 at the 29th Annual Otis Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show.

Mackie, a design mentor and longtime supporter of Otis will receive the 2011 Otis Design Legend Award. “The pièce de résistance of this year’s show is that we only get Bob Mackie every few years to teach at Otis and whenever we can make that happen, we will have the best finale ever,” said Rosemary Brantley, founding chair of Otis’ fashion design program. “Bob Mackie makes all of us better…... The students and the faculty I feel like in many ways are always trying to [aspire] to make it good enough. I do feel like the students all leave ultimately with a level [of] quality that happens at the school primarily because of people like this,” she added.

Santa Monica Place, which opened last summer, is being recognized for making an impact with its modern redesign and for incorporating green-building practices. Eric Salo, Executive Vice President of Macerich Company attended the event on behalf of the shopping center and CEO, Art Coppola, will accept the 2011 Otis Creative Vision Award at the event.

Attendees at the reception included designer Eduardo Lucero, actress Diahann Carole, swimwear designer Rod Beattie, Christopher Wicks of English Laundry and musician Matt Sorum, formerly of Velvet Revolver and Guns N’ Roses.
