Celebrating the Art of Costume Design

Ready for the Oscars? If you're like most fashionistas, besides the red carpet extravaganza, the Costume Design category is a highlight of the Academy Awards. Now is your chance to get up close and personal with over 40 of the Academy Award Nominated costumes. The "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" exhibition just opened at the Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising.

A fashionable fete on Saturday evening kicked off the 19th annual event. It features over 100 actual costumes from over 20 films including Academy Award Costume Design nominees "Alice in Wonderland," designed by Colleen Atwood, "The King's Speech" by Jenny Beavan, "The Tempest," by Sandy Powell and "True Grit," by Mary Zophres.

In addition, there are costumes from the other Oscar categories including "Inception," and "The Kids Are All Right," which are both nominated for Best Picture. Other fashionable highlights include the costumes for "Coco Chanel Igor Stravinsky," "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," and "Burlesque."

The event which is created each year with the help of the Costume Designers Guild, honors the artistry and talent of the designers of the big screen. The exhibition runs from February 8 to April 30 at the FIDM Museum Galleries and is free to the public.
