Los Angeles Fashion Week: California Market Center Contemporary Collections

The fashion vibe revved up on the runway when the California Market Center staged a Fall 2011 fashion show for five contemporary lines with showrooms in the building.

The March 15 show on the 13th-floor penthouse had sophisticated looks from Musani Couture, whose glitzy evening gowns swished across the floor. The Italian line was heavy on embellished looks for long trumpet gowns and short cocktail dresses that sparkled under the track lights. Iron Fist took a casual approach to sophistication with colorful plaid skirts and dresses paired with equally bright cardigans. Switching up the look, there were metallic black mini-dresses emblazoned with fun graphics matched up with a velvet jacket or a brown polka-dot coat. Designer Joy Han chose bright prints for her Voom by Joy Han collection for Fall, including a yellow and purple imprint for a maxi-dress and a bright green strapless dress printed with a black, lacy design. Off-the-shoulder silhouettes were popular. Han mixed it up with crochet capes and leather jackets with skinny-leg pants.

Launched last August, Los Angeles label Miilla likes to think of itself as a subdued casualwear line with clean looks. That was seen in a white knit mini-dress with white fringe at the shoulders or the white blouse with curved lines that slouched over a pair of skinny dark gray cargo pants. But there was glitz, too, such as a rhinestone-covered gray mini-dress with an empire waistline. Vintage-inspired dresses were the inspiration for the Los Angeles–based Nataya line. Airy fabrics and lace made dresses float down the runway. Switching gears, the designer’s dresses came in a thicker taffeta with ruched skirts and lace accents at the top. —Deborah Belgum
