Patagonia Hopes to Restore the Great Plains

Buy some buffalo jerky, save the environment.

That, in a nutshell, is the mantra that Patagonia Provisions has been chanting these days ever since it was started three years ago by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard.

Patagonia Provisions, whose goal is to offer ethically and sustainably sourced food, is partnering with Wild Idea Buffalo to make buffalo jerky using 100 percent grass-fed buffalo that graze naturally and roam freely. The buffalo jerrky meat has no hormones and is antibiotic free.

When buffalo graze naturally and roam freely, they nurture the prairie by recycling nutrients and tilling the soil. Wild Idea Buffalo is run by Dan and Jill O'Brien in South Dakota where they produce the buffalo jerky.

"We want to support farming and ranching that puts food on the table without poisoning the earth," said Rose Marcario, chief executive of Patagonia. "Wild Idea is part of a movement to regenerate grasslands and help sequester carbon."

The $10 packets of buffalo jerky will be sold at all 30 Patagonia retail stores and online at patagoniaprovisions.com.
