Enthralled by the Mall

The future is here. Or it will be once the $5 billion American Dream Meadowlands mall opens, that is.

The project is being developed by Triple Five Group, the folks who own the Mall of America, the Bloomington, Minn., mall that opened in 1992 covering 4.9 million square feet including an indoor amusement park and two seven-story parking lots.

Slated to open in 2017,American Dream will spread out across 91 acres in the historic New Jersey Meadowlands and will feature skylights, large windows, plants and fountains. The new mall will feature the largest indoor amusement park AND an indoor waterpark (developed with Dreamworks SKG) AND an 800-foot long indoor ski hill AND a 300-foot Ferris wheel with views of Manhattan. That’s to say nothing of the 150,000-square-foot food hall featuring 15 restaurants.

But wait, there’s more.

There will be a 1,400-seat Cinemex X4D movie theater, in which the 4th dimension is smell. (The jokes just write themselves, don’t they?) Moviegoers will be able to “smell scents from weather and items in the movie they are watching,” the company says. Also, the seats move.

With so much mall to love, it’s enough to make this former Jersey Girl nostalgic for the old country. No mention of a video arcade, but I bet it will be freaking awesome.
