San Francisco Fashion Week '07: Richard Hallmarq

Under the big top was where designer Richard Hallmarq found his muse for his newest collection of men’s and womenswear. The colors were bright, and the prints were bold. He was particularly high on sequined leggings that came in bold reds, yellows and greens. “Going to the circus inspired me,” said the Sacramento, Calif., resident. “I took some of the characters, like the Siamese twins and the strong man, and played with it.” The results were some edgy, wild fashions that started down the runway with a striking ankle-length black-and-white print dress. The same print was used in a slim-fitting and sleek men’s shirt that could have taken its own walk on the wild side.

Brightness was found in an ankle-length halter-top knit dress with green, pink, brown and yellow stripes. The same fabric was used in a caftan top cinched with a green belt and worn with bright-green leggings. “It’s over the top,” Hallmarq admitted. —Deborah Belgum
