Pop Goes Obey, Michael Nusskern Debuts at Fashion Island

Artist setting up Obey pop-up

We’ve seen Obey Clothing and the work of Shepard Fairey at skate shops, Nordstrom and the 2008 presidential campaign. Yet on April 30, New Yorkers will witness an Obey first. Obey Clothing will produce its first pop-up shop on New York’s LowerEast Side.

The stated reason for debuting an Obey pop-up shop a continent away from the company’s Orange County headquarters is a Big Apple art show. The pop-up shop will coincide with a show at Deitch Projects gallery devoted to the works of Obey founder Shepard Fairey.

The pop-up will feature one-of-a-kind Obey T-shirts and some of the most fashion-forward items from Obey’s collection. The boutique will close May 16, but will it make way for a permanent Obey boutique? The brand’s spokesman seemed open to the idea but was vague. “I can say that telling the Obey story within our own space is definitely of interest,” Chris Broders said.

Last week may have marked the appearance of California’s newest specialty chain. The Michael Nusskern boutique opened its second location April 16, when its new 1,900-square-foot boutique put down stakes at the Fashion Island retail center in Newport Beach, Calif.

Michael Nusskern offers sophisticated women’s fashions featuring brands such as Barbara Bui, Vivienne Westwood and Isabel Marant. Michael Nusskern owner Wakim Kivorkian said he hoped to offer the Fashion Island shopper more variety. “The new boutique will feature more designer collections and unique, edgy brands,” he said.
