Fashion and Graffiti Make Nice...Obvious Not Being So Obvious

Once a symbol of urban blight, graffiti is increasingly considered high fashion by some luxury designers.

The celebrated New York label Proenza Schouler recently debuted its graffiti-print jeans, which are part of its Fall 2010 collection. The graffiti jeans are sold at upper-crust retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman.

In Los Angeles, the upstart Luxury Loves Company label recently debuted its design collaboration with graffiti artist Saber, who will be featured in an upcoming Museum of Contemporary Art show called Art in the Streets. The Saber X LLC handbags feature original graffiti canvases by Saber, which are stitched into fabric of the calfskin totes. So far the bags are only sold on the recently debuted Luxury Loves Company website.

If some labels are trying graffiti, other labels are just trying something new. Obvious Clothing was once known for T-shirts with interesting graphics. At the upcoming Pool Trade Show, it will be debuting its new line of basic fashions, with different burnout treatments and a sweater line called Lolly Cashmere. Lolly’s wholesale price points will range from $52 to $110.
