No Jeans for Johnny & Angelina

The Atypical Tourist: Johnny Depp and the cast of The Tourist eschewed typical tourist uniforms in the film.

There’s a romance in travel, but there’s nothing sexy about tourism.

Take a trip to any tourist hot spot; think New York’s Times Square, Disneyland, Las Vegas Strip, and you’ll see how the proverbial masses want to spend their leisure time; dressed in boxy T-shirts and ratty jeans.

That’s what I half expected to see in Golden Globe-nominated movie The Tourist. However, the film’s title belies a more elegant style according to the film’s costume designer Colleen Atwood.

The stereotypical gauche, tourist style was not going to be seen anywhere near the film’s stars Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, or the film’s cast of gangsters, cops and the odd delivery guy as they pursued each other through the picturesque canals of Venice, Italy.

“With The Tourist, we wanted the feeling of a slightly more elegant, yet modern world,” Atwood said. “So no shorts, no fanny packs, no denim, except the odd worker, then (they) wore it with a tie. I also used more skirts on ladies, more leg, to convey a different kind of take on today.”

Definitely a more elegant today. I’d like to take a trip there.
