California Tops the List of Export-Related Employment

More exports mean more U.S. jobs—particularly for California. That’s the word from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which released a report that says every billion dollars in exports supports more than 5,000 jobs in the United States.

Export-related jobs in the United States rose 5.7 percent to 9.2 million last year, according to the report, released by the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. “The exports surge in 2010 supported an additional half million jobs for U.S. workers—growth critical to America’s economic recovery,” U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in a statement accompanying the July 6 release of the report.

The report also ranks the states whose manufactured exports support the most jobs, including 21 that count more than 100,000 jobs supported by exports. California is at the top of the list, with 616,500 jobs supported by manufactured exports, with Texas coming in No. 2, with 538,500 jobs.

“More businesses are reaching customers in foreign markets and seeing their sales rise, which leads to more good-paying jobs in the United States,” said Francisco Saacute;nchez, under secretary of commerce for international trade. “The International Trade Administration is committed to helping U.S. firms find lucrative exporting opportunities around the globe and ensuring access to these markets. Our efforts improve the global business environment and help U.S. companies compete abroad, creating jobs at home.”—Alison A. Nieder
