FYF Fest's Rebel Style

Friendly grafitti at the punk rock FYF Fest.

Success is not the most punk rock outcome for a festival devoted to punk music. But the annual FYF Fest, which took place on Sept 3 at Los Angeles State Historic Park, was a smashing,bona-fide success.

More than 20,000 people checked out the FYF festival to take in bands with a pop edge like Broken Social Scene, late ’70s-early’ 80s punk heroes The Descendents and new dance bands like Nosaj Thing. The 12-hour-event went off with few technical glitches or any major problems with law and order. It should make the Dodgers jealous.

Apparel News/Trade Talk graced the event with its appearance to check out the fashion. It made sense since Orange County skatewear brand Altamont was the presenting sponsor for FYF. Most people wore the typical rock fest uniform of T-shirts and jeans, but we found a few style savvy people who would stand out in any crowd. Dig and be dug.

Altamont skate team rider Chris Gregson naturally dressed in an Altamont Fall 2011 T-shirt.

Alana Ocano works at an American Apparel shop in San Diego. Naturally she is dressed head-to-toe in American Apparel. Her friend Joel Escobedo, a high school student, is dressed in Levi's jeans and an American Apparel top.

Designer Hellen Keller, left, flew his freak flag high at FYF. He made the graphic for his T-shirt and styled his distressed jeans. He said his fashion label was LeSlaveWorld. Oh yeah. He's holding Dvankin. She was styled head to toe by Madeline Anthony.

Yep, some honest-to-goodness punk looks at the punk fest. Fia Melkerson, left, wore a vintage vest styled with appliques she sewed on the vest. Her friend, Aidan Faith wore rags he picked up from Headline Records and thrift shops.

Thrift shops rank as a top destination for the alternative set. Tess Baur said she was dressed head-to-toe in Salvation Army chic. Her friend Tommy Goodkin was dressed in a Gap shirt, Ksubi jeans, and a bolo tie he picked up on eBay. Both attend Hamilton High in L.A.

In a sense Nadine Jenson and Ethan Renner are mainstream. They represented the typical jeans and T-shirt look at FYF. Nadine wore a naughty Urban Outfitters T-shirt bearing a graphic of two women kissing. She also wore American Apparel shorts. Ethan wore a flannel shirt and T made by American Apparel, his jeans by Levi's.

Devin Lawrence showed himself to be his father's son. He's wearing the 1984 Olympics T-shirt his dad picked up at the wrestling competition at the '84 Olympics. This Devin is not the sculptor who shares the same name. All the same, FYF Devin was a well dressed guy.
