Guest Blogger: Nick's Take on L.A. Fashion Week: Jerell Scott

It's L.A. Fashion Week and in case you had not realized this, there are TONS of events and fashion shows going on. First of all: What happened? IMG pulls out of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios and every fashionista worth their Naked and Famous skinny jeans, Rachel Pally jersey top and Louboutin pumps declared that it was "OVER" for L.A. fashion. Not so much, kiddies! Los Angeles Fashion Week kicked off on Monday evening with a fabulous rooftop reception hosted by Fashion Group International and titled The Designer and the Muse, where more than 30 designers showed up to fete Southern California style and glamour. Downtown L.A. Fashion Week is happening at the Geffen Contemporary/MOCA. Maybe I'm being a bit selfish, but I love the location. (I live two minutes away so I'm just happy I don't have to drive to Culver City!) I was invited to Project Runway Season 5 designer Jerell Scott's show at DLAFW and, of course, a boy like me could not turn that down! I brought my NIKOLAKI co-designer, David Paul, to check it all out. The pouring rain couldn't keep me away from supporting a Project Runway alum.As soon as I arrived, I was whisked backstage to take a "peek" at the models (who were ready for their catwalk close-up). The models looked dangerously gorgeous in their smeared smoky-eye make-up and teased-and-tousled hair. Back in our seats, David and I were excited as we spotted one of our favorite stylists, Kit "Pistol" Scarbo (Project Runway Season 4) and the very pretty Emily Brandle (Season 5 designer). I’m sure it wasn’t a coincidence that we were all seated together! It was like a Project Runway reunion. The show began with singer Countre Black providing the fierce RB-meets-House soundtrack (singing live!). For Spring 2010, Jerell Scott showed 1920’s–inspired flapper shift dresses, as well as very feminine printed blouson silk mini-dresses perfect for a young Hollywood starlet. If the Jerell Scott girl wants day, she can look no further than the lovely group of printed cotton “short-to-long” dresses he offered up. The stunners, however, were definitely the mini-dresses in contrasting sequined fabric and tulle with shoulder padded accents. Trust me, these were FIERCE! Jerell definitely has a point of view and I admire his eye for mixing fabric. There’s a hint of a young Christian Lacroix in his dresses—but with an urban edge. It was very 1920s speakeasy DIVA. After the show, Jerell explained that it was “an exploration of the world’s obsession with Hollywood decadence and glamour.” Well then, get me a ticket to ride on the Jerell Scott Decadence Train! Kit "Pistol" Scarbo, Emily Brandle and Nick
